An equal player in this case study of artistic community is Konrad Cramer’s wife, American painter Florence Ballin, who studied at the Woodstock branch of the Art Students League under landscape painter Birge Harrison. While her husband Konrad experimented with abstract painting and novel photographic techniques, Florence worked in the American regionalist traditions of realism and plein-air painting. Her collage of St. Catherine imitates early Christian mosaics.
