Himself a photographer and now one of the world’s most respected photography dealers, Howard Greenberg founded the Center for Photography at Woodstock in 1977, along with Michael Feinberg. CPW’s collection of nearly 2,000 photographs and other photo-based artwork includes donations and commissions by artists who participate in CPW’s residency programs. Greenberg discusses CPW’s founding and mission in this video.
Jessie Tarbox Beals was the first woman to be hired as a photographer by an American newspaper, the Buffalo Inquirer. While she is best known for documenting events and places, she also created portraits of women artists and entrepreneurs, like sculptor Edith Unger.
