Appropriation art, which recontextualized existing imagery to produce new meanings and interpretations, shaped photography in the 1980s. Ann Lovett’s “Stargazer Series” consists of 26 Polaroid photographs of collages incorporating mass media imagery, diagrams, objects, and drawings. The seven photographs on view here express the anxieties of their time, such as commercialism, poverty, nuclear war, terrorism, and armed conflict.
