With Untitled #6 from the American Book Cover Series, Xaviera Simmons used photography and performance, made possible through the Center for Photography at Woodstock’s residency program, to insert herself into pictorial landscapes that excluded people of color for hundreds of years. She describes the series as “portraits and self-portraits that explore the subjective position of a non- fixed and multiple identity.”
